September 11, 2001, will always be remembered as one of the most tragic and darkest days in the history of the United States. Although the world views it as a historical date, for me, it is not merely a page in history. On that morning, I was present in that very city, breathing that same air, and witnessing that horrific scene of death with my own open eyes. It is an event whose pain remains as fresh in my heart today as it was at that very moment. All of this is not a fictional story, but the eyewitness reality experienced by Om Verma, an Indian living in America, as he saw the fierce form of the 9/11 attacks with his own eyes.

Om Verma recounts that on that morning, he was standing in the Broadway area of New York City. The weather was very clear, and the start of the morning seemed completely ordinary, just like any other day. He had breakfast items in his hand and was just about to start his day. Suddenly, a loud roar was heard in the sky. Looking up, he saw a large American Airlines passenger plane flying extremely low. Seeing it, he was deeply astonished as to how such a huge aircraft could fly so low and so close to the city's buildings.

Before he could process anything, a massive explosion occurred, and the plane slammed directly into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. A short while later, a second plane arrived and crashed into the second tower. Right before his eyes, those two iconic 'Twin Towers' that defined America were engulfed in flames. Dense plumes of black smoke were rising from the skyscrapers. The structures that were the pride of New York just a few minutes ago now looked like nothing more than a burning furnace.

The people trapped inside the buildings were making every possible effort to save their lives. That scene was so terrifying that it is impossible to express in words. Both towers were among the tallest and strongest buildings in America, but in that moment, they appeared as helpless as a house of cards. The people trapped on the upper floors had no way out left. Thousands standing below were watching the sky in helplessness, crying out in terror.

While this horrific scene of destruction was unfolding on one side, the spirit of humanity and duty was on display on the other. Teams from the New York City Fire Department, Police Department, and ambulance services had arrived at the scene without caring about their own lives. All these First Responders were working with all their strength to evacuate people safely. They knew that going up meant stepping into the jaws of death, yet they rushed inside those burning buildings without hesitation.

Immediately after the attack, the pace of the entire New York City came to a sudden halt. As a security measure, the entire New York City Subway service was shut down, and shortly after, power went out across a large area. There was chaos everywhere. People began rushing out of commercial buildings and offices in panic. Due to the power outage, countless people were trapped inside elevators, with no apparent way to rescue them.

By three o'clock in the afternoon, the city's landscape had completely changed. The city that never sleeps fell into a deep silence, and only the sirens and alarms of police, fire trucks, and ambulances could be heard echoing through the streets. The towers had collapsed, and all of Lower Manhattan was covered in thick clouds of dust and ash. Vehicles lay crushed under debris, and people covered in dust were running around in distress.

When all means of transportation inside the city came to a standstill, people were left with no option but to walk. To reach safer places outside the city, thousands upon thousands of people started walking towards the bridges. All the bridges connecting Manhattan were packed with crowds of pedestrians. Fear was visible on everyone's face, but alongside it was a silent effort to support one another.

In that period of immense calamity and disaster, the most beautiful form of humanity came to light. Shopkeepers along the way opened their doors to the general public without any self-interest. Even though there was no electricity or light in the shops, shopkeepers started distributing food items and water to people without charging a penny. No one asked anyone for their name or identity; whoever appeared thirsty or hungry was offered help.

We were also part of that crowd, walking continuously in search of a safe place. After walking for nearly three hours, we finally crossed the Queensboro Bridge. Upon crossing the bridge, we saw buses parked there, waiting to carry people to safe locations. Drivers and volunteers boarded people without getting tired and transported them to secure places. That journey was not just about covering distance; it was about moving from terror toward life.

It was a deeply painful and harrowing scene, one that still makes the soul shudder when remembered today. Today, we pay our humble tributes to all those innocent people who lost their precious lives on that dark day. We also feel the pain of those families and remember them, whose lives were changed forever after that single event and whose loved ones can never be replaced.

We bow from the bottom of our hearts to the undaunted courage of our brave first responders and ordinary citizens who put everything on the line to save others. The way police officers, firefighters, and paramedics sacrificed their lives while performing their duty is an example of bravery in history. Alongside them, the contribution of ordinary citizens who held the hands of strangers without caring for themselves and pulled them out of the jaws of death can never be forgotten.

The extraordinary courage, unity, and humanity demonstrated by the residents of New York and all of America during that extremely difficult, terrifying, and painful time serves as an example to the world. In the face of that massive plot of hatred and terror, people held hands and proved that humanity can never be erased. That unity emerged as the single ray of hope in that dark hour.

Time passes, years change, and cities regain their momentum, but the scars of wounds never fully fade. We always remember those martyrs and victims, honoring their sacrifice. That morning of 9/11, those burning buildings, and those weeping faces are a bitter truth that we will never be able to forget, no matter how much we wish to.
